    Coupled ocean-atmosphere dynamics of the 2017 extreme coastal El Niño.

    In March 2017, sea surface temperatures off Peru rose above 28 °C, causing torrential rains that affected the lives of millions of people. This coastal warming is highly unusual in that it took place with a weak La Niña state. Observations and ocean model experiments show that the downwelling Kelvin waves caused by strong westerly wind events over the equatorial Pacific, together with anomalous northerly coastal winds, are important. Atmospheric model experiments further show the anomalous coastal winds are forced by the coastal warming. Taken together, these results indicate a positive feedback off Peru between the coastal warming, atmospheric deep convection, and the coastal winds. These coupled processes provide predictability. Indeed, initialized on as early as 1 February 2017, seasonal prediction models captured the extreme rainfall event. Climate model projections indicate that the frequency of extreme coastal El Niño will increase under global warming

    The equatorial planetary waves simulated by the NCAR CCM1 general circulation model were investigated in terms of space-time spectral analysis (Kao, 1968; Hayashi, 1971, 1973) and energetic analysis (Hayashi, 1980). These analyses are particularly applied to grid-point data on latitude circles.     Mid-Infrared Imaging of the Bipolar Planetary Nebula M2-9 from SOFIA

    We have imaged the bipolar planetary nebula M2-9 using SOFIA's FORCAST instrument in six wavelength bands between 6.6 and 37.1 μm\mu m. A bright central point source, unresolved with SOFIA's ∼\sim 4′′{''}-to-5′′{''} beam, is seen at each wavelength, and the extended bipolar lobes are clearly seen at 19.7 μm\mu m and beyond. The photometry between 10 and 25 μm\mu m is well fit by the emission predicted from a stratified disk seen at large inclination, as has been proposed for this source by Lykou et al and by Smith and Gehrz. The principal new results in this paper relate to the distribution and properties of the dust that emits the infrared radiation. In particular, a considerable fraction of this material is spread uniformly through the lobes, although the dust density does increase at the sharp outer edge seen in higher resolution optical images of M2-9. The dust grain population in the lobes shows that small ( 1 μm\mu m) particles appear to be present in roughly equal amounts by mass. We suggest that collisional processing within the bipolar outflow plays an important role in establishing the particle size distribution.Comment: 40 pages, 9 figures, 2 table

    Description and calibration of the Langley unitary plan wind tunnel

    The two test sections of the Langley Unitary Plan Wind Tunnel were calibrated over the operating Mach number range from 1.47 to 4.63. The results of the calibration are presented along with a a description of the facility and its operational capability. The calibrations include Mach number and flow angularity distributions in both test sections at selected Mach numbers and tunnel stagnation pressures. Calibration data are also presented on turbulence, test-section boundary layer characteristics, moisture effects, blockage, and stagnation-temperature distributions. The facility is described in detail including dimensions and capacities where appropriate, and example of special test capabilities are presented. The operating parameters are fully defined and the power consumption characteristics are discussed

    An H∞ design for dynamic pricing in the smart grid is proposed. This design jointly considers the operation of a distribution network operator and a market operator. In the design, a ratio of the regulated output energy to the disturbance energy is minimized to address the worst-case scenario. Linear matrix inequality approaches are used to formulate the design problem as a convex problem. Fuzzy interpolation techniques are integrated into the design procedure so that nonlinear grid dynamics can be addressed. In contrast with existing designs, the proposed design can yield a more reliable and practical pricing scheme as shown via simulations
